The word hatha means willful or forceful. Hatha yoga is a very wide term that refers to any yoga class that uses sets and sequences of physical exercises known as asanas or postures. However, with so many different types of yoga today, Hatha Yoga class usually refers to a class that goes at a slower pace. Initial centering and warm up is usually followed by few rounds of Sun Salutations, followed by a sequence of static postures (asana). Hatha is also translated as ha meaning “sun” and tha meaning “moon.” This refers to the balance of masculine aspects—active, hot, sun—and feminine aspects—receptive, cool, moon—within all of us. Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites, as we develop a balance of strength and flexibility in our physical body, but also in our mind. It is the balance of effort and surrender in each pose, fueled by the breath and concentration which helps us to be more present in the moment.
